about

How do I even begin to write about this project? HPWN is my final labor of love for dangelobenjamin. In 2022, amongst emotional tumult, in anticipation of grief, and in fear of the unknown, I thought "we're all songwriters, fighting our own fight." The lyrics turned out to be "fighting the good fight." I guess that's close enough.

The chord progression and simple melody of part 2 came first. The main piano riff was one of the first major developments, and is what convinced me to start producing the song in the summer. I almost finished part 2 immediately. I sat on that exported track until I knew what to do with it. Later on I finished the chord progression to an entire song without any idea what to do with melody. Again, I had a thought, "I've got to write this song." I knew it was time to get to work on part 1. It was time to start singing. So late one night in the autumn, I cried as I sat at the piano and soothed my aching heart. Once I could sing it in its entirety without crying, I recorded it. I still ended up crying at the very end.

Originally, HPWN was just a concept album, no music to the song ideas or storyline. I knew I wanted Songwriting Part 2 on it, but it didn't even have a song name yet. Once I finished part 1, I decided to add as many songs and instrumentals as I could. I ended up with around 45 minutes of stuff that I felt was somewhat cohesive. I sat on that idea for months and months. Finally I scrapped a ton of songs and pieces and settled one a shorter 15 minute EP. Later in life I plan to record and release the stuff cut, but for now I just feel they're not ready for whatever reason. Maybe I'll just let some of the songs sit forever in my unreleased catalog.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for listening.
